1) Make Meaning
Making meaning means that you change the world. By changing the world means that you are making money, but if you start of doing thing by thinking of making money, you won't be able to make money, you won't be able to change the world and you properly will fail.
If you want to do things, determine how to make meaning and how to change the world.
For example:
• Apple - They want to demarcates computer. They want to bring computing power to everyone.
• Google - They want to demarcates information, making information to available to everyone.
• ebay - They want to demarcates commerce. So they can make everyone with computer to stand toe to toe with any other large retailer.
• YouTube - They want to enable everyone to create video, to upload video, and to share video.
If you really want to make meaning, that is the first step towards innovation.
2) Make Mantra
A two or three words to explain why your meaning should exist.
For example:
• Wendy's - Healthy Fast Food
• Nike - Authentic Athletic Performance
• FedEx - Peace of Mind
When you decide on the kind of meaning you make, try to find two to three words to describe why your meaning should exist.
3) Jump to the next Curve
Don't just make things 10% better, jump to the next curve.
Example: Ice business
Late 1800 - early 1900: Ice harvesting business
During winter, they go to a frozen lake or pond, cut blocks of ice.
30 years later: Ice factory
Don't have to wait for winter. They froze the water into ice in the factory.
(No more limitation for season)
another 30 years: Refrigerator
Everyone can have their own "ice factory".
Great innovation occurs when you gets to the next curve.
4) Roll the Dicee
Great innovation is DEEP (Lots of features, lots of functionality).
Great product is INTELLIGENT, COMPLETE, EMPOWERING (make you more creative, more productive), ELEGANT.
5) Don't Worry, Be CRappy
When you have the first product and it's crappy, it's ok. If you wait for the perfect world, wait for everything to be in place, everything will be good. When you jump to the next curve, it's ok to have elements of crappy.
6) Let 100 Flowers Blossom
When you start creating your product, you have everything in mind (who's your customers, who's your user, what they should do with your product). You may be surprise when people use your product the way you did not expect, by people you don't expect. It's ok. Product are suppose to be decide how to use by the user, not you.
7) Polarize People
Great product polarize people. You can love or hate a product. Don't be afraid to polarize people.
8) Churn Baby, Churn
9)Unique vs. Value
Unique
Value
Top Left: Very unique, but no value.
You're playing stupid if you do this.
Bottom Left: Not unique and no value
The USC corner. The worst corner.
Bottom Right: Great value, not unique.
Have to compete on price.
Top Right: Unique and Valuable
The corner you should be in.
10) Prefect Your Pitch
You have to learn to pitch.
Follow the rules for slides show: 10 slides, 20 minutes, font size 30.
BONUS: Don't let the Bozos Grind you down
The more innovative you are, the more they will grind you down. Don't listen to losers, because only loser will listen to loser. Rich and famous does not equal to smart. Rich and famous equal to lucky and smart.
